About Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids is a very common condition, found most commonly in adults between the ages of 45 and 65.
It is estimated that 10,000,000 Americans suffer form this condition and that as much as 75% of Americans will
experience hemorrhoids at least once in their lives. Hemorrhoids afflict both men and women, and although
not as common, may be found in children as well.
The term hemorrhoids refers to enlarged or inflamed veins on or around the anus. Hemorrhoids may be
found inside the anus (internal hemorrhoids) or visibly, on the outside (external hemorrhoids).
A number of factors can contribute to hemorrhoids. Constipation, chronic diarrhea, and sitting for
prolonged periods of time are among the leading causes. Other causes may include pregnancy, diet,
infection, heredity, and other rectal conditions.
Symptoms can include itching, pain, and blood in the stool and/or rectum/anus. In the case of internal
hemorrhoids, you may notice blood in your stool, in the toilet bowl water, and/or on toilet paper following a
bowel movement. Bleeding might possibly be an indication of a more severe problem, however, and professional
medical advice is recommended if anal bleeding or bloody stool is noticed. Other symptoms include above
normal moisture and itching around the rectum, and/or lumps or bulges which are highly sensitive or even painful.
